For example, atomic and nuclear physics studies matter on the smallest scale at which chemical elements can be identified. The physics of elementary particles is on an even smaller scale since it is concerned with the most basic units of matter; this branch of physics is also known as high-energy physics because of the extremely high energies necessary to produce many types of particles in particle accelerators. On this scale, ordinary, commonsense notions of space, time, matter, and energy are no longer valid.
Classical mechanics approximates nature as continuous, while quantum theory is concerned with the discrete nature of many phenomena at the atomic and subatomic level and with the complementary aspects of particles and waves in the description of such phenomena. AMS is an ultra-sensitive analytical technique for measuring low levels of long-lived radionuclides and rare trace elements. At Purdue we have constructed a major national AMS facility centered around the Physics Department’s tandem electrostatic accelerator. We are using the accelerator to measure both man-made and cosmic-ray-produced radionuclides such as 10Be half-life 1, , years , 14C years , and 36Cl , years in natural samples having isotopic abundances down to one part in 1x a thousand million million.
Although the instruments and detection methods are those of nuclear physics, research applications are concentrated in the Earth sciences and biomedical sciences.

Unlike the radioactive isotopes discussed above, these isotopes are constantly being replenished in small amounts in one of two ways. University of Sussex Research led by a University of Sussex scientist has turned a year-old law of physics on its head in a development which could lead to more efficient recharging of batteries in cars and mobile phones. Jordi Prat-Camps, a research fellow at the University of Sussex, has for the first time demonstrated that the coupling between two magnetic elements can be made extremely asymmetrical.
Prat-Camps’ research rips up the physics rule book by showing it is possible to make one magnet connect to another without the connection happening in the opposite direction. The findings run contrary to long-established beliefs of magnetic coupling, which emerge from the four Maxwell equations dating back to the seminal works of Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell in the 19th century. Electric diodes are so crucial that none of the existing electronic technologies such as microchips, computers or mobile phones would be possible without them.
If our result for magnetic fields would have one millionth of the same impact as the developments in electric diodes, it would be a hugely impactful success. The creation of such a diode opens up a lot of new possibilities for other scientists and technicians to explore. Thanks to our discovery we think it might be possible to improve and the performance of wireless power transfer technologies to improve the efficiency of recharging phones, laptops and even cars.
